However, the holiday still has supporters, many of whom view the date as a recognition of Italian accomplishments (Columbus originally hailed from Italy, even though his voyages were organized at the Spanish empire’s behest). This history has spurred several cities and states, including Vermont and the District of Columbia, to change the holiday’s name to Indigenous People’s Day. Many critics argue it’s inappropriate to celebrate Columbus, whose 15th- and 16th-century campaigns through Central America and the Caribbean Sea resulted in the killing and enslavement of many Indigenous people. Columbus Day has been federally recognized for nearly 100 years, but the holiday is increasingly polarizing.
